Networks for Change

Kari Niedermaier Posted by: Kari Niedermaier Print PDF

As parents, we quickly realize that it is a waste of time and energy to parent from scratch. Why recreate the parenting wheel of wisdom, when we could simply connect with older, wiser parents and compare notes? This, of course, doesn't mean that we don't occasionally incorporate new and innovative techniques into our day but on a whole, it is wise to follow the paths already taken by parents we respect.  The same can be said for changing the world. Yes, we need innovation! But, we also need to know what others have tried before us, what hasn't worked and why, and who who could team up with us now to more effectively achieve our goals.

Where to start?  I came across an amazing blog post recently that catalogued "Top 100 Networks for People Who Want to Change the World."  Here you will find networks for:

Making the World Greener

Affecting Climate Change and Energy

Encouraging Social Responsibility

Giving to Charities and Nonprofits

Volunteering

Good Deeds and Helping Hands

Politics

Social Change

Although these resources are a great place to start to network, explore best practices, and get ideas for projects, many of us plan to work with and for parents to affect the change we would like to see in the world.  So, here, at Parents for Change, I think we need to add a list of parenting networks where we can recruit fellow advocates and impress upon all parents how parenting offers unique opportunities for social change. We are, after all, an amazingly motivated segment of the population and we are raising the next generation, to either be better stewards of our society and the world or to cause even more damage!  Here are the networks I've thought of so far (please add more in the comments as you see fit!)

And don't forget the social networking sites we discussed in a previous blog. Although they were not built specifically for parents, they are still a popular online meeting place!

just wanted to add to the social networking sites...myspace has a host of groups you can join that suit your parenting needs, even as specific as "tandem nursing mamas" or "parents against crying it out" and so on. i used to go on there to help people and connect them with resources & information, but it became too time consuming. i know it is helpful for a lot of people though!

There is also www.mamasource.com where parents can post questions about their parenting/life struggles and have the community answer their questions. It allows you to select your area of the country and have people from that area respond. Quite interesting questions, and responses. I believe you can also post your business on there for free, without a link or for a fee with a link.
