Do you have tips for organization and time management?

Do you have relaxation and stress management skills you'd like to share?

Business of Change

What is your passion or business for change?

How did you get started?

How did you identify your audience and/or clients?

How did you reach this audience? What resources did you use?

As you were starting out, what barriers stood in your way? How did you overcome them?

Think about the process you used for the logistics of your passion/business.  How did you organize your business entity, accounting, licenses, insurance, etc.?  Why did you do it that way? What resources did you use? What do you wish you would have done differently?

All passions (business or not) require funding. How did you identify funding sources? How do you sustain these sources?

In tight economic times, what creative things have you done to secure funding?

If you run a business, how has your business prospered by incorporating community building, education, and /or advocacy into your business?

How do you consciously run a business? (sourcing, staffing, marketing, etc.)

Community Building

If you see yourself as a community builder, what was the first community you helped to build?

What are the attributes of a strong community and how do/did you help to incorporate them into your community building?

How do you identify and encourage leadership in your community?

How do you solve conflicts when they arise in community-building?

What suggestions do you have to encourage more member ownership in the community?

What wisdom can you share in fostering better communication within leadership, within the community, and between the leadership and community?

What types of activities sustain your community? Describe activities that work and that don't work when doing community-building with parents and families.

Education

If you consider yourself an educator, how did you get started? Tell us about your first class or coaching session.  What went wrong? What went right?

What are the particular barriers to teaching adults (as opposed to other populations), and parents in particular? Do you have resources you'd like to share?

Do you teach families (parents and children) or just parents? How do you set up your classes and coaching sessions to accommodate family schedules?

Where do you teach? How did you find this locale? What are the benefits and downsides of using space in a private business vs a public location (community center, library, etc.)

Have you been able to forge creative relationships to meet your needs for space, marketing, etc. If so, how and where?

Advocacy

If you consider yourself an advocate, how did you get started. Describe the first issue you tackled, how you approached it, lessons learned, and the outcome.

Do you use upstream approaches (making change at societal/political level), downstream approaches, or a mixture? Why? What approaches work best under what situations?

Do you have advice on how to organize a petition, media campaign, or letter-writing campaign?

What resources are available to people who want to begin advocacy efforts?  Where would you start?

All

What is your biggest success in your business or passion?

What is your biggest failure?

If you could start all over, what would you do differently and why?

A Case Study in Networking

E-mail Print PDF

Any endeavor for change requires networking. But, what is networking and how do you go about doing it?  According to Dictionary.com, networking is "a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest."  As an agent of change, networking also:

  • decreases the legwork and information-gathering necessary to get any new endeavor off the ground
  • offers a venue for you to share ideas and get support on how best to proceed
  • helps to disseminate your intentions among a group of people who 1) might be interested in helping and 2) probably have contacts and clients interested in your products, services, and/or community
  • may offer opportunities to buy or acquire goods and services at discounted prices

If networking is necessary, how to do you start?  Exploring a case study in networking will be more instructive than reviewing a dry set of directions.

The Five Steps to Failure

E-mail Print PDF

Why is it that some people reach for the stars and end up flying into the next galaxy while others (and that might be you) can't even seem to get off the ground?  Some argue its luck.
